Plant lovers have a new reason to grow pothos (Epipremnum aureum) at home. According to a study by NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration), this ornamental plant —very popular in households—can eliminate up to 73% of the carcinogenic substances present in indoor air.

The study, titled “Indoor Plants for the Reduction of Indoor Air Pollution,” was conducted to evaluate how effective plants are at combating air pollution in enclosed spaces. The results show that the plant excels at absorbing toxic compounds within a 24-hour period under controlled laboratory conditions.

The NASA research focused on filtering out substances that are highly harmful to human health, many of which are present in our daily lives without us even noticing. These compounds are found in furniture, paints, fabrics, cleaning products, and even cigarette smoke.

Invisible Pollutants are Everywhere

Among the pollutants the pothos fights are formaldehyde—used in furniture and textiles; benzene—found in paints, plastics, and cigarettes; and trichloroethylene—common in cleaning products and adhesives. All of these compounds are associated with respiratory problems and an increased cancer risk with continuous exposure.

The most concerning part is that these pollutants are invisible and silently accumulate indoors, gradually affecting our health. In this context, having a plant can be a natural and affordable solution to minimize risks.

In addition to its purifying function, pothos also helps improve air humidity and may contribute to a sense of well-being in indoor environments. Its versatility and ease of care make it ideal for various spaces, even for people with little gardening experience.

The Plant Symbolizes Luck and Growth in Feng Shui

Common in many homes, pothos is also valued in practices like Feng Shui, where it symbolizes growth and prosperity. Its aesthetic, with dark green leaves and yellowish accents, enhances the space and promotes health benefits.

Hardy and adaptable, this plant thrives in places with partial shade or indirect light and requires little maintenance. It's perfect for both homes and offices.

Proven effective against pollutants, pothos is more than just a decorative item: it's a silent ally that promotes a healthier and more balanced environment.
